The very first step to writing is to make sure you know how to keep your words organized. It’s very likely that you already know what I’m about to mention, but for those who don’t, keep reading!
Paragraphs: You must start a new paragraph in all of these circumstances… (when a new person speaks; when the topic changes; when the focus shifts). To indicate a new paragraph, indent the first sentence. If you’re writing with a computer this can easily be done using the TAB key.
When you skip ahead in your story (such as starting a new chapter or simply a new section), if any significant amount of time has passed, you should indicate the time change. (Ex: A few hours later, we…; The next morning, I decided to…) This will really help the flow of your story and eliminate any awkward leaps through time. Don’t just suddenly start a new chapter without letting the reader know that the setting has moved on.
Another thing about paragraphs: it’s okay to create a new paragraph in the middle of dialogue! If one block of speech is lengthy and changes subjects somewhere in between the quotation marks, start a new paragraph, putting a new quotation mark at the beginning of the new paragraph. DO NOT put a quotation mark at the end of the old one. Only put an ending quotation mark at the very end of the entire quote.
These are only a few basic steps to keep your writing organized. The deep stuff comes later. If you have anything to add/mention regarding this, please do comment your thoughts!
